RFK to host MLS Cup 2007

Everything is under the radar these days. Breaking with the recent past of only holding MLS Cup Finals at Soccer Specific Stadiums, The Washington Post is reporting that MLS will announce that the 2007 MLS Cup Final will be at RFK.

Now, for all the conspiracy minded out there who think that MLS was somehow instrumental in the Adu trade, this might feed that fire, since it offers DC a nice little bit of free publicity right after the Adu trade. For the moment, I will imagine that these are seperate stories... but man, the timing is interesting, no?

Addendum: Commenter Ray W says there ain't no quid for the quo here. I believe him. Also, there's something good about knowing that even if DC doesn't win the 2007 Championship, we'll still be closer to the Cup next year than the LA Galaxy ever will.

Could it be a move calculated to keep momentum behind the team's plans to get its own stadium?

Nothing related to Adu. There was talk in Dallas during this year's cup about it. in other words, it was a badly-kept secret.

It may well be a calculated move to help with the new stadium plans; but again, nothing Adu-related.

Host the most important game of the year on a field with a baseball diamond in it, when there are actual soccer stadiums elsewhere to show off? Brilliant!!!!

I can vouch for Ray W's words. I heard them in Dallas, too.

Hey anonymous bonehead, there will be no baseball diamond, the Nationals are moving out and the stadium will be OURS all OURS again. RFK: Soccer specific stadium.

BTW: I heard a rumor they will announce the deal to buy United tomorrow went through.

OK well if they announce that then the league definatly had a hand in the Adu trade

I don't think this has anything to do with Adu whatsoever.

Maybe this is about rewarding big, loud crowds instead of seeing another shiny, empty, depressingly quiet new stadium on ABC every year.

The crowd at RFK brings atmosphere, thus a better televised experience, and that's what ABC/ESPN is going to want to see after its investment.

That's my theory.

Agree with Joe, and not only that, if DCU makes the MLS cup, the place will sell out and be absolutely crazy.
